Practically all fire doors in the common areas of a building are required to have glazed apertures incorporated, providing the same level of fire performance as the rest of the door assembly.

 

Because of the difficulty in achieving even modest levels of fire performance, glazing has often been routinely omitted from fire door leaves. We are all aware of the need, however, to be able to see from one side of a doorway to the other. This is particularly important in the event of an emergency to ascertain if an escape route is clear of flames or smoke without exposure to severe risk by opening the door. In everyday service, of course, there is still a need to see what is on the other side in order to avoid accidents.. Disabled people, the elderly and young children are particularly vulnerable and for this reason, glazing is required in both the top and bottom halves of any relevant door leaves.

 

Modern technology has brought about significant advances but it is still very common to find fire doors in older buildings with inadequate or non-existent glazing provision. Attention to the deficiencies in this area remains technically complex with many different fire-rated glass types and numerous specialized sealing systems designed to ensure their overall performance. Retrofitting of glazed apertures is highly desirable but should only be entrusted to experienced professionals such as DTC.

 

As well as the more common wired glass, DTC can fit several types of clear un-wired glass with fully verified fire performance.

 

DTC experience extends to other apertures often required in fire doors, including letterplates, ventilation grilles and security viewers, all of which similarly need to provide the same level of fire performance as the rest of the door assembly.
